The Neighborhood

A suburb designed before the car, and it shows

In 1911, the developer George Stephens hired the landscape architect John Nolen to lay out a cotton farm southeast of Charlotte. Nolen refused the grid. He curved the streets to follow the land's contours, set houses back behind deep lawns, and specified willow oaks along every right-of-way — trees that would take fifty years to come into their own.

They did. Today the canopy over Queens Road West is the single most photographed thing in Charlotte, and the houses beneath it run from 1915 Colonial Revivals to carefully argued modern infill. Myers Park is not a preserved district frozen in amber; it is a working neighborhood where the standard of care simply never dropped.

Myers Park sits about two miles southeast of Uptown Charlotte, bounded roughly by Queens Road, Providence Road, Selwyn Avenue, and the Little Sugar Creek corridor. Most addresses carry the 28207 or 28209 ZIP code and are a ten- to fifteen-minute drive from both Uptown and SouthPark.

Three things: the 1911 John Nolen plan, which curved the streets to follow topography instead of a grid; the willow oak canopy planted with that plan and now more than a century old; and an unbroken run of significant residential architecture from the 1910s to today. No other Charlotte neighborhood combines all three at this scale.

Myers Park consistently ranks among the highest price-per-square-foot neighborhoods in Charlotte. Values range widely — from smaller cottages on the Selwyn edge to multi-acre estates on Hermitage and Queens Road West that trade well into eight figures. Check current Canopy Realtor Association market data and the county assessor for verified figures before making assumptions.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools assigns most of the neighborhood to Myers Park High School, with elementary and middle assignments varying by street. Several highly regarded independent schools — Charlotte Country Day, Charlotte Latin, Providence Day — are within a short drive. Always confirm assignment by address with the CMS locator, because boundaries change.

Yes, and it happens regularly through tear-down and rebuild on existing lots. What makes it complicated is the tree ordinance protecting mature canopy, tight setbacks on older platted lots, and — for properties within a designated historic district or carrying landmark status — a Certificate of Appropriateness review before work begins.

It is exceptionally walkable for recreation and moderately walkable for errands. Sidewalks run nearly everywhere, the Little Sugar Creek Greenway connects the neighborhood to Uptown and Freedom Park, and Selwyn Avenue offers a small commercial node. For groceries, dining variety, and shopping, most residents drive a few minutes to Park Road, Providence Road, or SouthPark.
